Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar To Meet US President Donald Trump On March 7th

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar is expected to meet US President Donald Trump on March 7th.

The Prime Minister made the disclosure while speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Day 2 of the 50th CARICOM Heads of Government meeting taking place in Basseterre, St. Kitts and Nevis.

Asked about her discussions with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who was in St. Kitts and Nevis for talks with CARICOM leaders, the Prime Minister said their meeting focused on expanding cooperation in energy and security.

She also reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to reopening the Petrotrin refinery, noting that Secretary Rubio agreed to connect Trinidad and Tobago with the US Department of Energy to assist in identifying the most suitable partner for the project.

Regional issues, including Haiti, Cuba, and engagement with Venezuela, were also raised at the CARICOM level with Secretary Rubio.

Meanwhile, Secretary of State Rubio said he and Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar spoke about making the partnership between the US and Trinidad and Tobago even stronger to ensure citizens from both countries are more prosperous and safe.

He said Trinidad and Tobago’s ongoing support for US military operations in the South Caribbean Sea is one example of many that is helping to protect citizens from both countries from the scourge of drug trafficking.

The Prime Minister is expected to return to Trinidad and Tobago on Wednesday night.
