Sweet steelpan music emanated from the Scarborough Esplanade this weekend as Tobago steelbands engaged in Pan Trinbago’s Pan Jamboree, part of World Steelpan Day celebrations.
The event also marked the launch of Tobago’s Panorama entitled “Pan Omega.”
PanTrinbago President Beverly Ramsey-Moore said Steelpan Month is being celebrated with several pan jams taking place across regions simultaneously. She said after Saturday’s launch of Pan Omega, the community’s continuous support is needed.
“In the safe and sacred spaces of our panyards, we capture our young people, channeling positive energies for the balance of the year. The entire ecosystem in terms of the culture will benefit. So I want you, the supporters, to go out there in your various communities and support your steelbands. If you don’t have a band in your community, just find one closest to you and give them your support. So I am so happy for all that is happening steelpan-wise in Tobago. We have great bands here.”
Chief Secretary Farley Augustine announced the Tobago House of Assembly’s support for Tobago’s own Panorama, which will be held for the Tobago Carnival on October 18th.
“The Tobago House of Assembly will be supporting not just by words but also giving financial backing to Pan Trinbago Tobago region and the national committee to ensure that Pan Omega comes off well in Tobago. I have also secured additional support from the Minister and the Ministry of Culture in Trinidad to support this activation in October.”
Six bands entertained the crowd for hours before calypsonian Johnny King closed the show.
