Tobago Police Division Ready For January 12th THA Elections

The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service Tobago Division is ready for the Tobago House of Assembly elections on January 12th.

On Thursday, police officials held a press briefing at the Scarborough Police Station.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Earle Elie says the TTPS Tobago Division is reporting an incident-free election season.

“Thus far we have had absolutely no negative reports, and it is more peaceful than the next one, but we are still putting all the precautionary measures in place because we know things could happen, things could change very quickly.”

Deputy Commissioner of Police Suzette Martin met with political representatives on Wednesday. Mr. Elie said the meeting was cordial.

“There were no major concerns or requests expressed by any of the parties. We again, Ms. Martin again, requested from them to encourage their supporters to behave themselves for the last couple days leading to the election.”

Superintendent Mark Joseph said that although the TTPS’ officials expressed confidence in people maintaining lawful behaviour over the next few days leading up to January 12th, increased police presence can be expected.

“The Tobago Division has increased patrols throughout the island to monitor public activity and maintain peace in the areas where political activity and gatherings occur. These patrols are designed to promote public confidence and deter unlawful behaviour. On Polling Day, that is Monday, police officers will be stationed at polling stations and returning centres.”

A brief admonition was also given to party supporters by ACP Elie: “We know persons are supporting different parties and sometimes emotions tend to get the better of us so please, let good sense prevail because if it doesn’t, the TTPS we will do what we need to do to ensure there is law and order on the island.”

Police officers from Trinidad are also expected to arrive in Tobago over the weekend to strengthen police presence for this election season.
