Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar SC says her Government remains committed to strengthening the Trinidad and Tobago Prison Service as part of its broader efforts to improve national security.
In a statement on Wednesday, Mrs Persad-Bissessar noted that Minister of Homeland Security Roger Alexander and Minister of Justice Devesh Maharaj visited the Trinidad and Tobago Prison Service Training Academy at the Golden Grove Prison Complex in Arouca on Wednesday and met with the first batch of recruits as training began.
She said the first intake had been planned for 250 recruits, with 226 trainees reporting for their first day of training.
“Additional recruits have already been contacted to join the programme, and we expect the full complement to be achieved shortly.”
Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar said those entering the service had chosen “a career of service, discipline and responsibility”.
“Their training will strengthen the operational capacity of the Trinidad and Tobago Prison Service, improve institutional security and support the rehabilitation of offenders.”
The Prime Minister also announced that recruitment efforts will continue, with a second intake scheduled to begin orientation on August 24th and training on September 1st.
She said the initiative formed part of the Government’s commitment to national security.
“As we continue investing in the people and institutions responsible for keeping our country safe. This is how we deliver on our promise of a safer, stronger and more secure Trinidad and Tobago. Promises Made. Promises Delivered.”
