Residents, shoppers, commuters and workers who traverse the streets of downtown Port of Spain on a daily basis can expect to experience a greater sense of security, as the Port of Spain City Corporation plans to establish a 24-hour police presence in the area.
Port of Spain Mayor Chinua Alleyne made the announcement at the city’s annual civic reception on Thursday, to mark the 111th anniversary of the restoration of the civic and municipal rights of the burgess.
“The Council has approved, and expects to commence in the not too distant future, the construction of a new police post on Independence Square. This investment is geared toward providing a 24-hour policing presence by the City Police on Independence Square and environs.”
Mayor Alleyne noted that the Council plans to make the city more liveable for its residents and the thousands of people who use the city’s streets on a daily basis.
“The Council has made significant investments in our plant and machinery in advance of the rainy season to see the city better prepared for any inclement weather. Our flood mitigation programme has been spearheaded by our Disaster Management Unit and the St. James Division. We have begun to see some success by way of reduced incidence of flooding in the central business district during recent rain events.”
Cultural activities are also receiving the Council’s attention, as Mayor Alleyne noted the successes of the 2025 Carnival season and promised an even better 2026 Carnival celebration.
“In just about one week’s time, we will collaborate once again with the Hosay Association on one day and three nights of celebrating Hosay in St. James. And in just over one month we will support the Emancipation Support Committee in the hosting of the annual Pan African Festival TT in the city of Port of Spain.”
The Civic Ceremony saw two parties receiving the key to the city: the Trinidad All Stars Steel Orchestra and the Bocas Lit Fest.
