Over $3 million in grants were distributed by the Ministry of Culture and Community Development to cultural and community groups responsible for hosting various celebrations on Trinidad and Tobago’s cultural calendar.
Twenty-two individuals received funding from the Community Action for Revival and Empowerment (CARE) Fund, and 19 individuals from the National Festivals Fund.
Line Minister Michelle Benjamin apologised to the recipients for the delayed distribution.
“My commitment here today is to tell you I am putting measures in place to fix that. Next year I want to make sure at least you get it before or the week of, but not months and years after.”
Minister Benjamin noted the significance of the grants in strengthening communities and individuals who keep our cultural calendar alive.
“These grants are designed to strengthen the very core of our society, because strong communities build strong nations. We are starting from the ground up. And alongside that, 19 individuals will receive funding under the National Days and Festivals Fund to the sum of $1.6 million. These grants support organisations and individuals who keep our cultural calendar alive.”
A total of $3.398 million was distributed. Minister Benjamin said the funds are investments and urged the recipients to use them responsibly.
“With this investment coming to you, it also comes with responsibility. I trust and I expect that these grants will be used wisely for their intended purpose, that the work being done will reflect the integrity and vision with which those proposals were submitted. I want to see the intent in the spend.”
