April 30th 2025 marked 45 years since Point Fortin received its Borough status.
Keeping with tradition, the Borough Day celebrations included a Civic Reception and Awards Ceremony, hosted this year under the theme “Making an Impact Going Forward” to honour those who have contributed significantly to the development of the Borough.
Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Point Fortin Borough Corporation, Victoria Allum, said: “We acknowledge the strength of Point Fortin lies not only in its resources or location but in the collective will of its people, from our civic leaders and public servants to the everyday citizens who pour heart and soul into our community.”
Awards of Excellence were given in Arts and Culture, the Performing Arts, Sport, Health and Wellness, Education, Community Service, and Community Development. This also included long-service awardees and employee excellence awards.
Point Fortin Mayor Clyde James attributed much of the hard work and joint mission and vision of the Borough Corporation and residents of Point Fortin as integral to the evolution of Point Fortin within the oil sector to one that includes tourism. He said this is high on their agenda.
“To our awardees, I want to thank you for the part that you have played in this Corporation and you being here is testimony of your hard work. We recognise it with all the different spheres that you have embarked on.”
According to San Fernando Mayor Robert Parris, Point Fortin is known as the energy capital and has assisted San Fernando in becoming the industrial capital of Trinidad and Tobago.
He said their diversification model continues to be seen as a perfect model, highlighting its inclusion of culture, arts and sports.
“And in every aspect that I just circled, Point Fortin has dominated Trinidad and Tobago in, and certainly we know that this occasion in awarding those that are the pillars, the bricks that make Point Fortin who they are, you all should be certainly acknowledged.”
