Guyana’s President Irfaan Ali has been sworn in for a second term after a decisive election victory.
The Guyana Elections Commission confirmed late Sunday that Irfaan Ali’s People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) secured 55 per cent of the 65-seat parliament.
His closest rival, businessman Azruddin Mohamed, finished a distant second with just under 25 per cent.
President Ali, who first took office in 2020, has drawn praise for steering oil wealth into social programmes such as free state university education, and the construction of roads, hospitals and schools.
At his swearing-in, President Ali promised new development and expanded social programmes to “build prosperity in every family and every home.”
