Two pillars of Trinidad and Tobago’s media landscape were honoured for their decades of dedication and impact.
Kenny Phillips and Ivan Toolsie were each awarded the Chaconia Medal Silver at the 2025 National Awards on Republic Day.
They were recognised for their outstanding contributions to the fields of arts, culture, media, and film – a moment both men described as deeply meaningful.
Mr. Phillips shared that he has always embraced thinking outside the box and hopes this national recognition will inspire the next generation of creatives.
“The fact that I am receiving this award concretised now that, you know, I am doing something right. To be honoured by your peers, your country, your people, and every one of the Excellencies on stage told me long overdue, well-deserved. I feel good.”
Meanwhile, Mr. Toolsie shared that he has always viewed journalism as a vital responsibility, one that highlights overlooked issues and amplifies the voices of those in need.
While acknowledging that the work may not be glamorous, he emphasised its importance.
“Well, when I got the news of this award, I was surprised, because I never thought, you know, that I would have been able to achieve something as great as this. But a lot of my friends are saying, I deserved this a long time ago.”
