Cricket West Indies Chief Executive Officer Chris Dehring has called on the Caribbean’s tourism sector to share greater responsibility for the sport’s sustainability, saying it continues to benefit financially from cricket without offering meaningful support.
At the State of the Tourism Industry Conference in Barbados, Dehring revealed that CWI had spent US$82.5 million on airlift and US$120 million on hotel accommodation over the past 15 years, yet receives little to no sponsorship from the tourism industry.
He praised Sandals Resorts International as the only hotel group that has consistently supported West Indies cricket, noting that the rest of the sector has fallen short.
Dehring made his remarks during a panel discussion with Anguilla’s Tourism Minister Cardigan O’Connor and West Indies legend Joel Garner, emphasising that stronger collaboration between cricket and tourism is vital for the region’s long-term success.
