Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar SC has extended condolences to the government and people of Guyana following the tragic capsizing of the MV Barima, and confirmed that Trinidad and Tobago is providing air and naval assets, as well as personnel, to support recovery efforts.
The ferry, carrying 116 passengers and crew, sank off the coast of Guyana late on Saturday. So far, 67 people, including 15 children, have been rescued, while the search continues for the remaining passengers.
In a statement on Sunday, Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar said her Government is deeply saddened by the tragic incident.
She also expressed support for those affected by the tragedy and acknowledged the ongoing rescue efforts, while confirming that Trinidad and Tobago is assisting in the response.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this tragedy, especially the families of those who remain missing or who have lost loved ones. We also pay tribute to the rescue teams whose courage, dedication, and tireless efforts continue as they work to bring survivors to safety. In this regard, air and naval assets and human resources from the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force are lending support to recovery efforts.”
Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar also reaffirmed Trinidad and Tobago’s solidarity with Guyana as search and rescue operations continue.
“Trinidad and Tobago stands in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Guyana as they anxiously await the safe return of their loved ones. We share in your grief and hope that those still unaccounted for will be found as search and rescue operations continue.”
According to reports, the MV Barima left Georgetown at about 3:15pm on Saturday for the 24-hour journey to Port Kaituma. A distress call was received at 11:01pm, prompting an emergency response involving the Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard and Air Corps, private aircraft, fishing vessels and civilian volunteers.
