As World Mental Health Day approaches on Friday, Acting Principal at Bishop Anstey High School, Dr. Winzy Adams, is reminding citizens that mental health and well-being are personal priorities.
This, as the institution held a series of activities on Wednesday to commemorate the day.
“At this school, we advocate for mental health and well-being, and we hope to advocate to our society in terms of the removal of the stigma associated with mental health, as it affects all.”
Dr. Adams described it as a privilege to host such an event that will positively impact the school population.
“They were able to utilise art therapy and well-being campaigns to help to create that sort of culture and ethos that will allow students to perform best in their school environment.”
Counselling psychologist Sule Joseph said in order to change society’s views and values towards mental health, it is crucial to address the issue with children.
“And therefore, you would see days like today, a lot of institutions and mental health professionals like myself coming to schools and working with schools to do just that, to eradicate some of the myths and so on surrounding mental health, and to uplift students and empower them to make them feel better about understanding mental health as an issue.”
World Mental Health Day is observed on October 10th each year.
