The Ministry of Trade, Investment and Tourism (MTTI) wishes to advise members of the public that it has received reports of fraudulent individuals issuing fake identification cards and falsely claiming to represent the Ministry’s Trade Licence Unit (TLU).
The public is strongly urged to exercise caution and to verify the identity of any person claiming to conduct business on behalf of the Ministry or the TLU. Official Ministry personnel can be verified by contacting the Ministry directly using the contact information below. The TLU is responsible for regulating the Foreign Used Car Industry in Trinidad and Tobago. Its functions include:
· Managing the Registration System for Dealers
· Maintaining the Quota Allocation System for Dealers
· Monitoring Dealers to ensure compliance with infrastructural requirements, warranty agreements, and good business practices
· Issuing Import Licences to Registered Dealers and Individual Importers The Ministry further advises that the TLU does not engage in the supply or purchasing of vehicles on behalf of customers. Any person or entity offering such services while claiming to represent the TLU or the Ministry is doing so fraudulently.
Members of the public are encouraged, when seeking to purchase foreign used vehicles, to transact only with bona fide Registered Dealers and Customs Brokers.
A listing of Registered Dealers is available on the ministry’s website or TTbizlink at: https://tradeind.gov.tt/registered-dealers-tnt/ or
