Government Fast-Tracks LPG Safety Regulations Following Fatal Incidents

The Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries (MEEI) has launched an urgent review of safety regulations governing Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders following a series of recent fatal incidents across Trinidad and Tobago that have claimed lives and left several persons injured.

In response to growing public concerns, the Honourable Ministers of Energy have instructed technical staff to urgently review and update draft LPG regulations that were originally prepared in 2020 but were never implemented.

“In the interest of ensuring a robust regulatory framework, the Ministry’s technical staff would have prepared and submitted draft LPG regulations in 2020 that were not progressed to the implementation stage,” the Ministry acknowledged in a statement. Officials have now been directed to fast-track this review as a matter of urgency.

The Ministry has convened discussions with key safety stakeholders, including the Occupational Safety and Health Agency (OSHA) and the Trinidad and Tobago Fire Services (TTFS), to enhance regulatory oversight, raise public awareness, and improve safety standards for LPG cylinders and related equipment.

The Trinidad and Tobago Bureau of Standards (TTBS) has been requested to reconvene its Specifications Committee for LPG to review and update national standards. The committee’s next meeting is expected to be held in early November 2025.

“This review will ensure that all LPG cylinders, accessories, and related infrastructure meet modern safety and performance requirements,” ministry officials stated.

Active engagements are currently being pursued with major players in the LPG supply chain, including the Trinidad and Tobago National Petroleum Marketing Company Limited (NP), Ramco Industries Limited, and Natpet Investments Company Limited (Natpet).

These discussions focus on assessing and enhancing existing inspection and safety protocols to ensure that all entities along the LPG supply chain adhere to the highest operational and safety standards, thereby protecting both workers and consumers.
