Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, Sean Sobers, says Trinidad and Tobago will be able to represent the region on the United Nations Security Council.
At Thursday’s Post-Cabinet Media Briefing, the Minister was asked whether the Caribbean Community would maintain its support for Trinidad and Tobago’s candidature, given the country’s backing of US counter-narcotics operations in Caribbean waters. CARICOM has called for the region to remain a zone of peace.
“CARICOM would have given its support to the candidature of Trinidad and Tobago as a non-permanent representative of the UNSC. We have been in contact with our UN PR Ambassador, Ambassador Parsan. There is nothing to suggest the candidacy is in danger.”
The seat is a non-permanent one on the Security Council and lasts for a two-year period.
