PM Praises Protective Services And Public Servants

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar SC has praised members of the protective services and public servants for helping to “dispel the darkness” in society through their commitment and sacrifice.

The message of Divali, the triumph of light over darkness, was at the centre of the Prime Minister’s address at the Office of the Prime Minister’s Divali celebrations on Thursday.

Mrs Persad-Bissessar singled out the nation’s protective services for their role in keeping citizens safe, as well as recognising the contribution of public servants.

“I have already said, but I wish to thank the Defence Force, the Police and Fire Service leaders and officers, our senior personnel officials, the Cabinet Secretariat, and all representatives of our State agencies. You serve in different ways, but your work helps protect our people, support our public officers, and sustain our national life. The Holy Ramayana, Lord Rama’s struggle against the evil Ravan, and the return to Ayodhya remind us that righteousness requires courage and that perseverance continues hope. It is a message we carry into our homes and the work we do for our nation. I also want to thank those of you who work in a different way. Those of you who work to dispel the darkness, and I want you to give a round of applause to the members of our protective services.”

The Prime Minister also said Divali’s message extends beyond the religious observance and should inspire those in public service to treat every citizen with dignity and respect.

“That spirit belongs at the heart of the Office of the Prime Minister. We serve every community, and we have a special responsibility to set an example of the respect and unity we cherish in Trinidad and Tobago. So we welcome, as we share here, that all should be felt by everyone here who turns to this office for help that we should serve every single one. That welcome depends on you, all of you in all the offices. It depends on your patience. It depends on your professionalism and your willingness to see a matter through.”

Mrs Persad-Bissessar also used the occasion to thank public servants for their contribution to national development and encouraged them to continue serving citizens with pride and dedication.

“To every member of staff, thank you for the work which keeps this Office moving. Whether you prepare briefs, whether you manage records, receive visitors, maintain systems, transport teams, or care for our surroundings, your contributions show what we can all accomplish together. I know the demands can be considerable. Urgent matters arise, deadlines change, and your family sometimes share the sacrifice. So please know we appreciate your efforts.”

The Prime Minister ended her speech by extending Divali greetings to the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago.

“May Mother Lakshmi bless your homes with peace. May Mother Lakshmi bless you with abundance. May Mother Lakshmi bless your families with health and happiness and your efforts with success. May this Divali bring renewed hope, strengthen our bonds, and bring greater harmony and prosperity to Trinidad and Tobago.”
