In celebration of San Fernando City Month, the Marabella Market received a thorough cleaning and sanitisation on Monday.
Speaking to TTT News, one vendor welcomed the move to clean the facility, saying: “It good they sanitising. We glad because it’s rat and cockroach and everything inside of there.”
Mayor of San Fernando, Robert Parris, said the clean-up will be done on a regular basis to address vendors’ concerns about the sanitation and upkeep of the space.
“So for quite some time we’ve heard your plight and we’re certainly doing our best to work on improving the conditions here at the Marabella market. This morning we are conducting a comprehensive cleanup of the market. This is also to coincide with our City Month celebration but this is something that the Council has decided on that we are going to do recurrently. I met with the President of the Marabella Market Association last week and he highlighted some issues to us.”
Councillor for Mon Repos/Navet and Chairman of Public Health, Nigel Couttier, assured that the Corporation is doing its best to ensure public health is up to standard.
“We know there are shortcomings. We know we cannot address every single situation or every issue but with a team working together with certain members of the Corporation, key individuals, we are planning and we are executing as planned to ensure that public health is is better than where it was some months ago.”
Mr. Couttier said that while the focus was on the Marabella Market, his team is working to address all sanitation issues within the city of San Fernando.
