PM Reminds Citizens Of Fireworks Restrictions This Divali Weekend

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar SC has issued a reminder to citizens on the use of fireworks this Divali long weekend.

In a statement on social media on Friday, she reminded citizens that fireworks may be discharged on public holidays between 8pm and 9pm only, without requiring a permit.

The legislation also prohibits the discharge of fireworks within half a mile of hospitals, airports, zoos, registered animal shelters, farms where animals are reared, forest reserves and national parks.

The Prime Minister encouraged citizens to celebrate responsibly while ensuring the safety, peace and comfort of those around them, including neighbours, elderly citizens, young children and animals who may be distressed by loud explosions.

The fireworks legislation came into effect in December last year, making it an offence to discharge fireworks without a permit issued by the Commissioner of Police, except during limited, specified times.
