The Office of the Attorney General is advising the public about its rights and responsibilities with regard to the discharge of fireworks.
The advisory comes just hours before the end of 2025.
In a social media post, the AG’s office quotes the Summary Offences Amendment Act, 2025 (Act No. 13 of 2025), which pertains to the discharge of fireworks.
The Act received the assent of Her Excellency the President on December 16th, 2025, and was proclaimed on December 19th, 2025.
As of December 19th, 2025, it became a fixed penalty or ticketable offence to discharge fireworks without a permit issued by the Commissioner of Police.
The exception to the law is a public holiday between 8pm and 9pm and today, December 31st, between 11:30pm and 12:30am on New Year’s Day.
It also became an offence to discharge fireworks within a half-mile radius of a public hospital, a private hospital, an airport, a zoo, a registered animal shelter, or a farm where animals are reared. It also bars the discharge of fireworks in a forest reserve or a national park.
In order to obtain a fireworks permit, the public is advised to submit an application to the Commissioner of Police in the approved form published on the TTPS website.
The application fee for a fireworks permit is $100, and the applicant must be 18 years of age or older.
