Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar SC and Minister of Homeland Security Roger Alexander have both hailed a significant drop in the murder rate for 2025.
In separate statements on social media on December 31st, they both confirmed a 42% reduction in the murder rate, saying the Government’s efforts over the past eight months had yielded results.
The Prime Minister stated on X, “I promised that my Government would act decisively to reduce crime, and we have delivered on that commitment. As indicated, by midnight, our national murder rate will be down by 42% – the largest decline in our nation’s history and one of the most significant drops globally this year. I extend sincere thanks to Commissioner of Police Mr. Allister Guevarro and my dedicated team: Attorney General John Jeremie, Minister of Homeland Security Roger Alexander, Minister of Defence Wayne Sturge, and Minister of Justice Devesh Maharaj. Their relentless work, discipline, and determination have been critical in lowering both the murder rate and serious crime across Trinidad and Tobago. Our fight continues. Our country deserves safety, stability, and peace – and we are making it happen.”
Minister Alexander, meanwhile, expounded on the data, which he said showed a “clear and encouraging trend towards a safer Trinidad and Tobago.”
“We have seen a historic 42% decrease in murders, dropping from 625 to 361. Woundings and shootings fell from 746 to 548, while robberies decreased by over 500 incidents. Furthermore, burglaries and break-ins are down by 20%. Our focus on road safety has always saved lives, with fatal accidents dropping from 115 to 92.”
The Homeland Security Minister pledged to continue building on these gains to make T&T even safer in the New Year.
“As we enter 2026, we do so with momentum. Investing in new technology and community programmes to keep our borders and streets safer.”
