Newborn Baby Found In South Oropouche

Police have launched an investigation after a newborn baby girl was found abandoned at the side of a roadway in South Oropouche on Thursday 20th August, 2026.

Around 12:30 p.m. yesterday, a 23-year-old Spanish-speaking non national of St Mary’s Village, South Oropouche, accompanied by a 47-year-old man of the same area, arrived at the Oropouche Police Station with the newborn baby.

The woman reported that around 12:15 p.m., she was walking along St Mary’s Road, in the vicinity of the South Oropouche Government Primary School, when she observed a cardboard box at the side of the roadway and heard the sound of a baby crying.

Upon checking the box, she discovered a newborn baby girl inside a black plastic bag, wrapped in a blanket, with the umbilical cord still attached. She immediately took possession of the infant and went to the home of the man, then they carried the baby to the Oropouche Police Station.

The infant was subsequently conveyed to a medical institution for assessment and treatment.

The mother of the infant has since been identified, and an investigation has been launched into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Children’s Authority has also been contacted and is assisting in the matter.
