Minister Sobers: T&T’s Relationship With Venezuela Remains Steadfast

Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs Sean Sobers says the relationship between this country and Venezuela is not compromised.

He says the current situation taking place in Caracas is fluid and dynamic, but Trinidad and Tobago remains steadfast in its relationship with our Spanish-speaking neighbours.

He says the Prime Minister remains focused on the best interests of this country when it comes to what happened on Saturday in Venezuela.

“We want to work with the United States as a long standing fraternal partner to make not only the United States, but its allies, Trinidad and Tobago being one of them, safer, stronger, and more prosperous. The well-being of the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago has always been forefront and paramount, most important to this Prime Minister and to this administration, and any policy by any country to ensure that occurs, Trinidad and Tobago and this administration, led by the Prime Minister, will support.”

Minister Sobers says he is not aware of any citizen feeling uneasy about the situation occurring in Venezuela on Saturday.

He says the National Security Council, led by the Prime Minister, worked effectively to activate pre-planned protocols to ensure that the country was kept safe as the US-led action was taking place.

“I don’t believe that it is correct to say that the Prime Minister did not give information as it came to us through the National Security Council. As information came, based on the sensitivity of the information and established protocols being reviewed at the National Security Council level, information was disseminated. This is an ever-evolving situation, and being sensitive in terms of what we say, what we do, and how we approach the situation is extremely important.”
