Tobago’s Sporting Facilities Getting Major Upgrade As THA Eyes Sports Tourism

The Tobago House of Assembly’s Division of Youth Empowerment and Sport says significant upgrades are underway across the island’s sporting facilities, with Easter preparations already complete and more developments on the horizon.

The Mount Pleasant Sporting Facility has undergone major refurbishment works in recent weeks.

THA Secretary of Youth Empowerment and Sport, Keigon Denoon, says the aim is to upgrade the facility to national standards.

“The aim is to ensure that we bring the Mt Pleasant Sporting Facility up to the standard of the TFA so that we can host Tier 2 games there. In conversation with the President of the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association, Mr. Kieron Edwards, we are in the process shortly of signing an MOU where the TFA would be assisting us in maintenance, in upgrades, and ensuring that all our sporting facilities on the island are not only up to standard, but are of the best quality nationally.”

At Shaw Park, works are approximately 85% complete, with paving works recently finished and acrylic surfacing next in line.

Regarding sports tourism, Secretary Denoon says the administration has big plans, including district games, Legends football and expanded regional meets.

“We have district games in the pipeline coming up that we are going to be restarting. We have also been in conversation with the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association to bring a Legends games here as well. As I said, all of those things are in the pipeline in conversation with some of the associations that we have met like netball and so forth and the track and field, also pickleball. We recognise that some of our athletes needs to have more meets and we are looking forward to ensuring that that is done as well. So sporting tourism is something that we are paying significant attention to.”
