Tracking Tobago’s Rare Birds in the Main Ridge

The Tobago Main Ridge Rainforest boasts of special species of birds such as the White-tailed Saber-wing Hummingbird.

But how much do we really know about them? And what can be done to protect these unique birds?

Since 2023, researchers have been collecting data through bird banding, an initiative under the BIOREACH Project, in collaboration with the Trinidad and Tobago Bird Observatory.

The White‑tailed Sabre-wing Hummingbird calls the Tobago Main Ridge Rainforest home. The endangered species is found only in Tobago and parts of Venezuela. To gain a better understanding of how these birds are surviving, researchers have been collecting data through bird‑banding.

The effort is being led by Co‑founder of the Trinidad and Tobago Bird Observatory Davika Boodram.
