Barbados Tridents Name Returns In Historic Cricket Rebrand

A historic cricket comeback is underway in Barbados.

After five years as the Barbados Royals, the franchise is reclaiming its roots, returning to the Tridents name and national colours as part of a landmark public-private partnership between the Government and the Royals Sports Group.

For many Barbadians like Kevon Edey, the announcement was long overdue.

“I’m very happy this is finally happening and Bajans across all walks of life had a little pep in their step today upon the announcement of the name change. You know, this is something we’ve been hoping for since the initial change in 2021.”

The original name change in 2021 drew sharp criticism at home. Many felt the switch from Tridents, the country’s most recognisable national symbol, to Royals was particularly ill-timed, coming the very same year Barbados became a republic.

Edey says the disappointment ran deep.

“So many Bajans were upset by that, inclusive of myself, and took to social media, you know, voicing their disapproval of the name change, but nevertheless, Bajans came out and supported the team.”

Now, with Barbados set to celebrate 60 years of independence in November, the timing of the rebrand has added extra meaning, and the return to blue on the jersey hasn’t gone unnoticed either.

“This really is a welcome treat to Bajans at home and abroad. So, I’m happy the name is back, and names matter, symbols matter, and I can’t wait to support the boys in blue in Kensington come September.”
