Local Author Launches The Newest Trinbagonian Fairytale – The Secret Of The Arboretum

Local author and environmental advocate Katrina Khan-Roberts is set to bring fantasy to life with the official launch of her latest children’s book, The Secret of the Arboretum, on Saturday, May 23rd, at The Arboretum in Tucker Valley, Chaguaramas.

Ms. Khan-Roberts, known for her longstanding work in environmental stewardship and ocean literacy, has spent the past 15 years volunteering with youth organisations focused on climate adaptation and environmental education. Alongside her advocacy work, she has built a reputation within Trinidad and Tobago’s performing and visual arts community and has authored several books over the past five years.

Her literary achievements include receiving the NALIS First-Time Author Award in 2021 and the National Youth Award in 2022. Her mermaid-inspired creative persona, “Mertrina,” has also been recognised as part of UNESCO’s Blue Thread ocean literacy network.

According to Ms. Khan-Roberts, The Secret of the Arboretum was inspired by her childhood fascination with mermaids and her love for Macqueripe. Written as a whimsical fairytale poem intended for bedtime reading, the story explores themes of imagination, wonder and nature.

Far from a traditional book signing, patrons attending Saturday’s launch are encouraged to bring towels and extra clothing, as the event will feature fully immersive and interactive activities inspired by the magical themes of the story.

Patrons can also expect a variety of themed attractions, including mermaid interactions, fairy dancing, storytelling sessions, face painting, a magical marketplace, and an “Ethereal Exhibition” art showcase. A themed photoshoot experience by Award Photography will allow guests to dress as mermaids or fairies and receive printed keepsakes.

Additional highlights include gourmet treats, local artisan vendors, fairy gardens, mermaid-themed merchandise and an exclusive author workshop for Standard Five students, who will receive certificates for participation.

Organisers say the event has been designed with safety and sustainability in mind. The launch will feature a dedicated Mom Zone, unlimited filtered spring water through a refill station, eco-conscious waste management services, and on-site emergency response personnel. No alcohol, stimulants or loud music will be permitted.

The programme will also include a live reading by the author, a presentation by the Arboretum management team, and a question-and-answer session featuring both Ms. Khan-Roberts and the book’s illustrator, Celéna.

The event takes place from 2:30pm to 5pm. Tickets cost $200 for one adult and one child and include a copy of the book. Additional adult tickets are $100, while extra children’s tickets are $50.
