42 Diseased Animals Euthanised After Bust Of Illegal Livestock Smuggling Operation In Cedros

A joint law enforcement operation along the Cedros/Icacos coastline has resulted in the seizure of illegally imported livestock and the humane euthanasia of 42 animals found to be infected with a communicable disease, prompting a national warning from Commissioner of Police Allister Guevarro about the dangers of animal smuggling.

At approximately 8:30 a.m. on Sunday 17th May 2026, officers of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), in collaboration with the Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard (TTCG), established a surveillance operation along the Cedros/Icacos coastline after acting on information received.

Officers observed a vessel hastily leaving the area — a detail that heightened suspicions. Shortly after, law enforcement intercepted a wheel tractor emerging from a forested area close to the shoreline, pulling a trailer carrying a quantity of animals.

The operation was led by Senior Superintendent Thompson and Superintendent Jaggernauth, supervised by ASP Corrie, ASP Forbes, Inspector Prescott, and Inspector Sirju, with Coast Guard personnel led by Petty Officer Seecharan.

The tractor and trailer were escorted to the Cedros Police Station, where a headcount confirmed the presence of thirty-five (35) sheep and seven (7) goats — a total of 42 animals.

A coordinated response was immediately activated, involving multiple TTPS units and the Ministry of Agriculture’s Veterinary Services. The Chief Veterinary Officer for St. Patrick examined the animals and determined they were suffering from an infectious disease.

In accordance with national biosecurity protocols, all 42 animals were humanely euthanised between 17th and 18th May 2026.

Commissioner of Police Allister Guevarro used the occasion to issue a stark warning to anyone considering bypassing the country’s lawful livestock importation procedures.

“Illegal livestock importation is a reckless act that threatens national food security, public health, and the livelihoods of farmers,” Commissioner Guevarro stated.

The Commissioner made clear that anyone attempting to circumvent lawful importation procedures will face “decisive enforcement action,” reminding the public that animal smuggling is a serious criminal offence under Trinidad and Tobago law.
