The Couva/Point Lisas region is being positioned at the heart of Trinidad and Tobago’s economic boom.
Recognised as a fast-growing commercial and urban hub, the area is predicted to generate billions of dollars in revenue as the Ministry of Trade, Investment and Tourism moves to revitalise dormant assets, reshaping the region’s future.
Speaking at the Couva Point Lisas Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday, at the Private Sector Organisation of Trinidad and Tobago’s ‘On the Road to Transformation’ Consultation, Director of Investments at the Ministry of Trade, Investment and Tourism Irfan Hosein said the government has identified more than 100 dormant assets across Trinidad and Tobago for rejuvenation under a phased plan approved in October 2025. He said several of these assets are located in Couva, positioning the region to benefit from a billion-dollar revenue stream and wider national economic growth.
“Thus far over 130 assets have been identified within the registry. Over 10 of these assets have been prioritised for rejuvenation, with others to follow. Our database includes four State assets in the Couva area, including Couva Children’s Hospital, Brechin Castle, Sevilla Estate and Home of Football Hotel.”
Mr Hosein noted that the main goal is to integrate sport, business, events, heritage, and eco-tourism into a single package, creating a comprehensive tourism offering for the region.
“Couva is one of Trinidad and Tobago’s strongest sport tourism hubs, with major facilities such as the National Cycling Velodrome, National Aquatic Centre, Ato Boldon Stadium, and the 72-room hotel Home of Football. These assets can support cycling events, swimming competitions, football athletics, training camps, and regional sporting tournaments.”
Meanwhile, Minister of Trade, Investment and Tourism Satyakama Maharaj urged Trinidad and Tobago’s private sector to “Think Local, Sell Global” as the Ministry pushes a stronger manufacturing drive to overcome the limits of a small domestic market.
“Your major problem right now is Forex but if you manufacture here, you have priority with the EXIMBANK to get your Forex. So anybody who is importing products I want you to look at the possibility of manufacturing here because you are going to get preferential access to Forex.”
This comes as the Ministry seeks to generate US$9 billion in non-energy revenue by 2030.
