DPP Directs Charges In Joshua Samaroo Police Shooting Case

Police officers involved in the shooting death of Joshua Samaroo may soon face charges.

Mr. Samaroo was shot on January 20th, 2026, at the corner of College Road and Dookiesingh Street in St. Augustine. Security camera footage of the incident showed him with his hands up, surrendering to police before he was shot.

Details regarding the police investigation were shared by Commissioner of Police, Allister Guevarro, at a Trinidad and Tobago Police Service briefing on Thursday.

He said the police have received direction from the Director of Public Prosecutions, Roger Gaspard, SC.

“On the 25th of March 2026, I confirmed through the media to the public that the investigation was at an advanced stage and that we were awaiting a final forensic report from the FSC before submission to the Director of Public Prosecutions. On the 19th of May, the day before yesterday, investigators collected the completed forensic reports and secured an audience with the DPP on the 20th of May, which was yesterday. My investigators met with and consulted with the DPP.”

Commissioner Guevarro indicated that the DPP had returned the file to the TTPS.

“Investigators were directed to proceed with a series of criminal charges arising out of the events which unfolded on that fateful day. At this time, however, it is important to note that no one is yet in custody or charged, and thus I cannot give you any further information as to the amount of charges or the nature of the charges until that status quo is resolved.”

The Police Commissioner added that he has instructed investigators to proceed with their investigation.

“At this time investigators have been directed accordingly to resolve that status quo, and I am currently awaiting feedback before I can update you further. Thus, I will not be expounding on this statement until I obtain an update from them. I cannot comment any further at this point.”
