The Office of the Attorney General is clarifying that the State of Emergency remains in force until midnight on June 17th, 2026, dismissing claims circulating on some social media platforms that the measure expires today, Wednesday, June 3rd, 2026.
The clarification comes amid the spread of misinformation online regarding the duration of the emergency measures.
In a statement, the Office said reports suggesting the State of Emergency had ended were inaccurate.
It also outlined the facts surrounding the State of Emergency as follows:
1. By Legal Notice No. 39 of 2026, the President declared, by Proclamation, that a state of public emergency existed in Trinidad and Tobago with effect from March 3rd, 2026.
2. In accordance with section 9(2) of the Constitution, the Proclamation initially remained in force for fifteen days and would have expired at midnight on March 17th, 2026 (the first day being March 3rd, 2026 and the fifteenth day being March 17th, 2026).
3. In accordance with section 10(1) of the Constitution, the Proclamation was extended by a simple majority resolution of the House of Representatives on March 13th, 2026, for a period of three months with effect from March 18th, 2026 and ending at midnight on June 17th, 2026.
