A remand inmate has died at the Maximum Security Prison.
The Trinidad and Tobago Prison Service says officers conducting routine rounds shortly after 6 a.m. on Tuesday found inmate Christopher Banfield lying motionless in his cell.
According to an interim report, established emergency protocols were immediately activated and officers from the prison’s Medical Services Department responded. First aid was administered and attempts were made to revive the inmate, however, those efforts were unsuccessful.
The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service has been notified, and investigations are now underway alongside an internal probe by prison authorities to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.
Prison officials say Mr. Banfield’s next of kin has been informed through an assigned Welfare Officer.
The Trinidad and Tobago Prison Service has extended condolences to the family and friends of Christopher Banfield.
