Recognised globally for its physical and mental health benefits, yoga continues to promote a healthier and more balanced lifestyle.
The High Commission of India, Port of Spain is now preparing to celebrate the 12th International Day of Yoga 2026, which is being held under the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing”.
High Commissioner of India to Trinidad and Tobago, Dr Pradeep Singh Rajpurohit, says the Indian High Commission, in collaboration with several local yoga organisations, will host a series of events leading up to the day.
“We are going to have at least three events coming up, starting from this Saturday at the Brahma Vidya Peetham in Gasparillo. Then the second event we have at the NCIC, in collaboration with Yoga Meditation Society. And the third event will be on 19th of June at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute for Cultural Cooperation, which is called Lymphatic Yoga, and in collaboration with Bodhi Tree Yoga Organisation.”
He noted that the ancient practice, which originated in India over 5,000 years ago, has grown into a global movement.
This year, millions around the world are expected to participate in an attempt to set a Guinness World Record for the most people engaging simultaneously in online yoga, an initiative supported by India’s Ministry of Health.
“Several activities have been planned, including on 14th of June, that an online yoga meditation platform has been created to have. This is for a Guinness Book of World Records to have the maximum number of simultaneous yoga performances.”
The national celebration of the 12th International Day of Yoga will take place at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva on June 21st.
The Indian High Commission is urging members of the public, whether experienced yoga practitioners or beginners, to take part in the events, which are free of charge.
