The rule of law must be respected.
This, from Minister of Homeland Security Roger Alexander, when he was asked to comment on the arrest of a prominent businessman who was arrested on Wednesday along with his wife.
He noted that he leaves the members of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service to perform their duties.
“Let’s wait for the outcome. And when we get that outcome, there is still another process that you have to go to court. Let us respect the rule of law. And this is what we have done in Trinidad and Tobago, we have lost that respect for the rule of law when we are telling, in some cases, the DPP what to do and we are telling the police how to do their job. No, do your job, wait for the outcome. The last place is a court of law.”
A 69-year-old female relative of the businessman has also been detained as part of the investigation.
Police have not disclosed what prompted the probe but have repeatedly stressed that detention should not be interpreted as evidence of wrongdoing.
