The address from Trinidad and Tobago’s Minister of Land and Legal Affairs, Saddam Hosein, at the 4th UN High-Level Conference on Counter-Terrorism on June 29, 2026, has been described as significant.
Professor Hamid Ghany said it was especially important given the country’s recent election to a temporary seat on the UN Security Council.
“Trinidad and Tobago, based on what he was saying, looking at the global situation with regard to terrorism and is commited to counter terrorism movement at the UN. And the Minister did reference the fact that Trinidad and Tobago will assume a seat on the Security Council of the United Nations with effect from first of January 2027 until the 31st of December 2028. So that Trinidad and Tobago will have a seat in a forum like the security council of the United Nations.”
Professor Ghany noted that Minister Hosein also highlighted counter-terrorism efforts related to digital threats, warning that such risks can significantly disrupt financial systems and cause widespread economic damage.
“The whole cybersecurity issue is one where States are constantly evolving their methodologies and their policies to deal with such situations and small states, such as ours in the Caribbean, we have to be ever mindful of that kind of environment and therefore a lot of our interconnectedness is dependent, to a large extent, on the maintenance of a secure cyber environment.”
The 4th UN High Level Conference on Counter Terrorism was held at the UN Headquarters in New York on June 29 and 30.
