African heritage took centre stage at the Diplomatic Centre on Thursday as the Office of the Prime Minister marked African Emancipation Day 2026 with a vibrant fashion showcase and a luncheon.
Rich vocal harmonies, pulsating African drums, and captivating folk dance filled the Diplomatic Centre as government officials and OPM staff, all donned in their African attire, joined Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar SC as she paid homage to the millions of Africans who were torn from their homelands by the horrific Transatlantic Slave Trade.
“They arrived stripped of their freedom. They arrived separated from their families. They were denied their names. They were denied their languages. They were even denied their humanity. Yet those ships carried more than human suffering across the Middle Passage. Those ships carry an unconquerable spirit that no whip could silence, no chain could have imprisoned, and no cruelty could ever extinguish.”
Despite this, the Prime Minister said African people demonstrated extraordinary resilience and played a pivotal role in shaping Trinidad and Tobago and the wider world.
“From unimaginable suffering emerged extraordinary resilience. For a people whose history sought to reduce to chattel, a civilisation emerged which has transformed these islands that we call home, and has helped to shape the modern world. Our African ancestors did far more than survive humanity’s greatest injustice. They helped lay the foundations of our nation.”
She noted that the story of African Emancipation is etched in the heart of humanity and observed by many nations.
“This year we are very honoured to welcome members of the diplomatic corps. We have done so this day because the story of African Emancipation belongs not only to T&T, not only to the Caribbean. It is one of humanity’s defining story. It is a testament of freedom over oppression, justice over injustice, and the enduring dignity of the human spirit.”
She stressed that African Emancipation Day is not just the story of one community but is the beginning of the modern story of Trinidad and Tobago.
