That legacy obliges us to honour one another, even in moments of disagreement, and to protect the social harmony that has long been one of Trinidad and Tobago’s greatest strengths.
It is therefore deeply concerning to witness efforts by some to fan the flames of racial division among our citizens. Name‑calling, vulgar messages and the demeaning of individuals based on race or political affiliation are beneath the standards we expect of ourselves as Trinbagonians. We are a people known for our warmth, our creativity, our intellect and our ability to rise above adversity. We diminish ourselves when we allow anger or prejudice to overshadow these qualities.
Our global stature requires more of each of us. Trinidad and Tobago is a nation that competes on the world stage — in trade, in culture, in innovation, in diplomacy. Investors, partners and visitors look to us not only for opportunity, but for stability, maturity and a society grounded in respect. Our country demands more of each of us as its citizens, because the future we are building depends on unity, not division.
Democracy thrives when ideas are debated vigorously, when perspectives differ, and when citizens challenge one another to do better. But democracy falters when disagreement becomes hostility, when passion becomes insult, and when our national conversations descend into racial antagonism.
As a citizen, I have seen firsthand how collaboration — across communities, sectors, and backgrounds — strengthens our competitiveness and expands opportunity for all. Under the leadership of Prime Minister The Honourable Kamla Persad-Bissessar SC, this Government remains firmly committed to improving the well-being of every citizen, regardless of race, religion or political affiliation. That commitment cannot be advanced through division. It can only be realised through mutual respect, dialogue and a shared sense of national purpose.
I therefore urge every citizen to reject rhetoric that tears at our social fabric. Let us recommit ourselves to the values that define us: tolerance, understanding, mutual respect and pride in our shared identity as Trinbagonians.
