The European Union is providing TT$6.2 million in grants to two civil society organisations in Trinidad and Tobago to strengthen the protection of migrants and refugees and to support efforts to prevent and respond to gender-based violence (GBV).
The grants, awarded to the Trinidad and Tobago Red Cross Society (TTRCS) and the Coalition Against Domestic Violence (CADV), reaffirm the EU’s longstanding partnership with civil society in Trinidad and Tobago and its commitment to promoting human rights, equality, human dignity, and inclusive societies.
The Trinidad and Tobago Red Cross Society has received TT$3.6 million for Additional Actions for Championing Migrant Rights in Trinidad & Tobago – Phase 2. Building on the Unity in Diversity project, the initiative will strengthen protection mechanisms and access to essential services for migrants and refugees. Activities will include integrated protection case management and emergency assistance, as well as improved access to healthcare, psychosocial support and legal aid. The project will also expand child-friendly spaces, recognising the specific protection needs of children and families affected by migration.
The Coalition Against Domestic Violence has received TT$2.6 million for Peace, Love and Understanding across Society, Trinidad and Tobago (PLUS TT). The initiative will contribute to the prevention of domestic violence and GBV, strengthen survivor-centred support, and reinforce the network of services and actors working to address violence against women and girls. PLUS TT builds on the progress and partnerships established through the EU/UN Spotlight Initiative, which supported national and community-level efforts to prevent and address violence against women and girls in Trinidad and Tobago between 2020 and 2023.
EU Ambassador to Trinidad and Tobago, H.E. Cecile Tassin, highlighted the essential role of civil society in translating shared values and commitments into practical support for communities:
