Chaguanas Prepares For City Status With Focus On Roads, Traffic And Business

With the Borough of Chaguanas set to be elevated to City status, Mayor Faaiq Mohammed says residents can expect major improvements in infrastructure, traffic management and economic development as the municipality prepares for a new chapter in its history.

Speaking to TTT News on Tuesday, he reflected on Chaguanas’ transformation from a former sugar-producing community into one of the country’s largest municipalities.

“As we go into that new chapter, I expect great things. You could see that the Government is already investing a significant amount of money that they want to do a project where they will alleviate the traffic within Chaguanas. I think that’s a main concern with the people of Chaguanas. We will also be looking to improve infrastructure work within Chaguanas. Flooding, bad roads, I think, is a major concern and that’s something we’re looking to address as soon as possible. We’re going to start to tackle the worst first and have that done.”

He also highlighted ongoing improvements at the Chaguanas Market, which he described as a key driver of economic activity in the Borough.

He said the municipality remains committed to investing in the facility and supporting vendors as part of efforts to strengthen the town’s commercial appeal.

“We continue to do repairs on our market because our market downtown Chaguanas is a place that encourages economic activity, and that’s the heartbeat of downtown Chaguanas. So we want to continue to invest into that and invest in our vendors, so that you know when people visit, they could say, ‘Yes, Chaguanas Market is truly exceptional.'”
