MIC Institute of Technology Limited (MIC-IT) and the Public Transport Service Corporation (PTSC) recognised five PTSC employees at a certification ceremony held on Thursday, 10 September 2026, at the MIC-IT Head Office Auditorium, following their successful completion of customised welding training designed around the repair and fabrication of bus components.
Delivered over 50 hours between 28 April and 16 June 2026, the training covered Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) and Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), combining theory, practical instruction, assessments and guided workplace site visits. Participants developed competencies in welding safety, fabrication, inspection and techniques applicable to bus floor panels, chassis and side body panels.
PTSC’s Maintenance Workshop staff Andre Ramlochan, Anthony Gittens, Joel Johnson, Rawle Voisin and Carl Campbell were all awarded with MIC-IT Level 2 Certificates of Achievement.
Mark Joseph, Head Fleet Maintenance, PTSC, spoke to the operational need behind the customised programme, noting that it was developed to address structural training gaps and strengthen welding capability within PTSC’s maintenance operations. He encouraged the participants to apply what they had learnt, raise standards within their teams and continue developing their skills.
In remarks delivered on behalf of MIC-IT Chairman Nazim Hosein, MIC-IT Director Chunilal Guiness emphasised the importance of keeping technical training closely connected to industry needs. “Industry knows what it needs. MIC-IT brings the technical expertise and training capacity to help meet those needs.”
Hansen Narinesingh, Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Tertiary Education and Skills Training, delivering remarks on behalf of Senator Professor Emeritus the Honourable Prakash Persad, Minister of Tertiary Education and Skills Training, pointed to the wider significance of PTSC selecting MIC-IT to deliver the programme. “That decision represents confidence in the capability of our national training institutions and demonstrates what can be achieved when Ministries, State enterprises and training institutions collaborate around a clearly identified workforce need.”
Delivering the feature address, Senator the Honourable Eli Zakour, Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, linked investment in employees to stronger public institutions and better service delivery. “When we invest in our human resources, we strengthen our institutions. And when our institutions are stronger, we are better able to serve the public.”
The ceremony marked the completion of a programme shaped around PTSC’s maintenance requirements and reinforced MIC-IT’s role in translating specific industry needs into targeted technical training. For the five participants, that meant strengthening welding skills directly applicable to the repair and upkeep of PTSC’s bus fleet.
