The Trinidad and Tobago Prison Service has intercepted a drone carrying contraband at the Maximum Security Prison.
The Prison Service says officers, acting on intelligence, conducted an operation around seven Thursday morning, resulting in the discovery of a crashed DJI drone on the prison’s rooftop.
Thirty packs of Lucky Strike cigarettes were found with the drone and confiscated.
Acting Commissioner of Prisons Elvin Scanterbury says the use of drones and other emerging technologies to traffic contraband is creating an increasingly complex challenge for prison security.
He says the Prison Service is adapting its strategies, strengthening intelligence capabilities and working with law enforcement partners to counter the threat.
The Prison Service says investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing.
