Minister of Homeland Security Roger Alexander says no police officer is above the law. He stressed that officers accused of misconduct must face due process.
“No one is above the law. And I often say, you bring your integrity to the organization and help it to be part of the asset of that organization. So you doing things that is contrary to the law doesn’t exempt you in any way. And you know what I like about the police service? They treat with their own. There are some other institutions that we don’t know where they went. They probably moved them away and all of these things. So we don’t do that.”
He said where there is sufficient evidence, the matter is referred to the Director of Public Prosecutions to determine recommended charges.
“Let the court decide your fate. You see? Once the evidence isn’t, if they have enough evidence, it has reached a threshold, they ask the DPP and he will make that, whether he recommends charge or not.
And that is how that is dealt with. But for the other police officers who continue to toil and toil and toil and toil, I want to commend them for the effort that they make daily, putting their lives on the line for people they don’t even know. One thing I tell them all the time, treat all persons as a member of your family.”
