Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has paid tribute to calypso legend Slinger Francisco, “The Mighty Sparrow,” describing his passing as the loss of an icon whose legacy will forever live in the hearts of all citizens of Trinidad and Tobago.
In a statement titled “Goodbye to the Greatest,” the Prime Minister said the nation mourns a true patriot and revered ambassador of Trinidad and Tobago’s culture, whose music, wit and unmatched contribution to the arts carried the spirit and stories of the country’s people across the world.
Persad-Bissessar said Sparrow had, for decades, been part of the soundtrack of Trinidad and Tobago, with music that made citizens laugh, made them think, and made them proud of who they are.
On behalf of the Government and people of Trinidad and Tobago, the Prime Minister extended her deepest condolences to Sparrow’s family and loved ones, closing her tribute with the words: “Rest in peace, Mighty Sparrow. Your voice will live on forever.”
