Minister Satyakama Maharaj Rejects Tourism Concerns Over Proposed Age Limits

Minister of Trade, Investment and Tourism Satyakama Maharaj is standing firm on Government’s proposal to increase the legal age for alcohol, tobacco, cannabis and gambling, dismissing suggestions that such a move could negatively impact tourism.

He said similar policies are being adopted internationally and argued that Government has a responsibility to protect young people from making decisions that can have long-term consequences.

“No, I don’t see that. That’s kind of benchmarks that all over Europe and North America. The world is going that direction. You see, 70% of the health problems in this country are lifestyle related, and we, the taxpayers, pay for that. For your poor choices, we pay for that. Right? And you know, I think we got to put our foot down with it.”

He said the issue goes beyond alcohol and gambling, pointing to vaping as one of the most pressing challenges facing schools today.

“I think we have to be careful. You know, one of the biggest problems in school today is vaping. Right? It’s terrible. We didn’t have it when we were young, but it’s a serious matter.”

He noted that the intention is to ensure young people are not exposed to activities that can adversely affect their future.

“I don’t want to see 18-year-olds going to the bar and drinking, gambling. At that age, you don’t fully understand what you’re doing. And by the time you reach 25, you’re lost. Right? And there’s scientific evidence for that.”

The Minister said Government intends to follow international best practices as it moves forward with youth protection measures.
