TTPS Strengthens Recruitment And Screening Procedures

Minister of Homeland Security Roger Alexander says the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service has strengthened its recruitment and screening procedures for incoming police constables.

Speaking in the Senate on Friday, he said the enhanced measures are designed to reduce the appointment of unsuitable applicants and strengthen public confidence in the recruitment process.

“The measures include enhanced verification and authentication of applicants’ documents and educational qualifications, strengthening background investigations into applicants’ character, conduct, association, reliability, and all overall suitability for appointment.”

Meanwhile, the Minister also outlined steps being taken by the TTPS to combat road traffic accidents and improve road safety enforcement across the country.

“This is intended to expand speed enforcement beyond highways patrol to divisional traffic units and strengthen enforcement along major roadways. The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service is also upgrading its breathalyser equipment to strengthen enforcement against driving under the influence.”

Minister Alexander also assured that mechanisms are being strengthened to improve accountability and discipline within the Police Service.

He said performance appraisals, supervisory oversight and a disciplinary framework are being enforced to address repeated instances of misconduct and non-compliance among officers.
