The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) is reporting a 16% decline in larceny of motor vehicles, with 578 reports recorded for the period ending October 1st, 2026, compared with 690 for the corresponding period in 2025.
However, Acting ASP Lloyd Lazarus, attached to the TTPS Stolen Vehicle Squad, says larceny of motor vehicles remains the predominant motor vehicle-related threat, accounting for approximately 76% of reported vehicle thefts.
He was speaking during the TTPS Weekly Media Briefing on Thursday.
“The data for 2026 indicates an overall decline in reported motor vehicle theft when compared with the corresponding period in 2025. Despite this positive trend, larceny motor vehicle remains the predominant motor vehicle-related threat, accounting for approximately 76% of reported stolen vehicles.”
He also noted that robberies involving the taking of motor vehicles declined by 51%.
“From 374 incidents in 2025 to 185 incidents in 2026. This represents a reduction of 189 incidents. The significant reduction in both categories is indicative of an overall improvement in the motor vehicle theft situation. Nevertheless, the continued predominance of larceny motor vehicles highlights the need for sustained preventative and enforcement measures targeting vehicle theft.”
