An amendment to the recently proclaimed Special Operations Act will align four of its seven districts with the new municipal boundaries proposed under the Municipal Corporations (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which was passed in the Lower House on Wednesday.
Attorney General John Jeremie SC introduced the amendment to Clause 13 of the Bill during the Committee Stage following the debate.
“It is necessary because the Bill changes the boundaries of some Municipal Corporations, renaming three Municipal Corporations, creating four Boroughs. So the description of the districts under the Special Operations Act, which came into force yesterday, last night, as it currently stands, should be changed to align with the proposals in the Bill. So the four districts in the Special Operations Act are being deleted and substituted to accurately reflect and be in sync with the provisions of the Bill.”
The four districts are as follows:
District 1 – includes Port of Spain, Diego Martin and San Juan/Laventille.
District 2 – includes Arima, St Augustine and Tunapuna
District 3 – includes Sangre Grande and Mayaro/Rio Claro
District 4 – includes Chaguanas, Couva and Tabaquite/Talparo
The remaining three districts are unchanged.
The Municipal Corporations (Amendment) Bill, 2026 was subsequently passed with 27 Government votes, while the Opposition voted against it.
