A taste of Trinidad and Tobago is being featured at an art exhibition at the “Y’ Art Gallery” in Port of Spain until March.
The pieces were designed by a group of art students who studied abroad and returned to showcase their talents.
Speaking at the opening night on Tuesday, artist Giorvana Hadeed said it took her approximately three to four months to complete her piece.
“My piece is called Sound of the Sea. It’s inspired by sea foam, ocean currents, movements. So just taking a material like steel that’s known to be harsh and making it into something that’s light and fluid and that kind of captures memory, reminds me of home, and that’s my idea of home.”
Another artist, Shannon Alonzo, said she has been involved in the creative industry since 2011. She said one of her pieces takes approximately two to three weeks.
“I decided to experiment a little bit more with watercolour and stitching, and the work that I have is sort of meditating on movements between spaces. So I was born in Trinidad, live here now, but I also lived in the UK for a long time, and a lot of my work is sort of influenced by this idea of attachment to place and what it means to be rooted in a specific space. So a lot of my work has mangrove imagery because I oftentimes relate that to the idea of being rooted into a space.”
