West Indies cricket fans at home and around the world will soon bid farewell to one of the region’s modern-day heroes.
Two-time ICC Men’s T20 World Cup winner Andre Russell is set to don the iconic maroon for the final time on home soil, as the power-packed all-rounder prepares to play his last two international matches at Sabina Park in Kingston on July 20th and 22nd, during the T20I series against Australia.
After more than 140 international appearances over a 15-year career, Russell reflected with deep gratitude, describing the opportunity to represent the West Indies as one of the greatest honours of his life. He admitted that as a child, he never imagined reaching such heights, but his growing passion for the game fuelled his drive to improve, make a lasting impact, and serve as a source of inspiration for others.
He also shared how much it means to play in front of his home crowd, especially with family and friends in the stands. As he prepares to close this chapter of his international career, Russell said he is determined to finish on a high note and hopes to set an example for the next generation of Caribbean cricketers.
The Jamaican all-rounder delivered countless memorable moments in both formats of the white-ball game. In One Day Internationals, he featured in 56 matches, scoring 1,034 runs and claiming 70 wickets, with best bowling figures of 4 for 35. In the T20 International arena, where his power and flair often electrified crowds, Russell played 84 matches, amassed 1,078 runs, and took 61 wickets, including best figures of 3 for 19.
West Indies Head Coach and former captain Daren Sammy offered heartfelt praise: “Andre has always been the consummate professional and a fierce competitor,” and that “whether he was captaining him or now coaching him, his hunger to perform and win for West Indies has never wavered.”
The coach wished him all the best in his next chapter, saying he hopes Russell continues to inspire generations to come.
Following the Sabina Park fixtures, Russell will make way for rising seamer Matthew Forde, who is set to join the squad for the final leg of the series at Warner Park in St Kitts.
