Christians around the world marked the start of Holy Week with Palm Sunday celebrations.
Here at home, faithful followers from the Anglican and Roman Catholic Churches gathered in the capital city to commemorate Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem.
During the procession, Bishop of the Anglican Church of the Diocese of Trinidad and Tobago, Claude Berkley; Dean of the Holy Trinity Cathedral, Reverend Dr. Shelly-Ann Tenia; and Vicar General of the Roman Catholic Church of the Archdiocese of Port of Spain, Father Martin Sirju, paused to pray for the City of Port of Spain on the Brian Lara Promenade during the Holy Trinity Cathedral’s Palm Sunday procession on Sunday.
Bishop Berkley prayed: “Heavenly Father, we lift up Port of Spain to you today, and we ask for peace to reign in this city, that our streets may be safe and hearts filled with joy and hope. We pray even for the leaders of our city that they may be guided by wisdom and righteousness.
Father Sirju prayed: “Fill us with your love and help us to remember the importance of sacrifice, for the way of the cross is the way to resurrection, and fill us with your spirit, a spirit of fidelity and courage to do what is right.”
Palm Sunday signals the beginning of Holy Week — a sacred period in the Christian calendar that remembers the life, suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Following the early morning walk through the capital, worshippers converged at the western car park of the Holy Trinity Cathedral for a service.
Over the coming days, Christians will observe Holy Week with solemn ceremonies and services, culminating in the celebration of Easter Sunday.
