Australian Deputy High Commissioner Commends T&T’s Efforts To Empower Women

Trinidad and Tobago is receiving high praise from the Deputy High Commissioner at the Australian High Commission for its continued efforts to protect and empower women.

Speaking during a recent International Women’s Day symposium, Deputy High Commissioner Caitlyn McPherson commended the country for advancing the Women, Peace, and Security agenda.

“Trinidad and Tobago has made history as the first Caribbean nation to officially launch a National Action Plan on Women, Peace, and Security. This milestone underscores the country’s commitment to fostering safer communities and enhancing national security through inclusive and sustainable peacebuilding efforts. Like Trinidad and Tobago, Australia remains deeply committed to the Women, Peace, and Security agenda through our whole-of-government action plan on WPS.”

In line with this year’s International Women’s Day theme, ‘Give to Gain,’ Ms. McPherson highlighted that giving—whether through time, skills, or mentorship—plays a vital role in strengthening communities.

“It recognises that giving is not a loss but an act of intentional multiplication that strengthens individuals and communities. It also fits neatly into the UN theme ‘Rights, Justice, Action for All Women and Girls.’ Giving can take many forms: time, knowledge, mentorship, advocacy, visibility, skills, creativity or resources. Each contribution helps expand opportunity, build confidence, and create networks of support for women and girls.”

The Deputy High Commissioner also supported an International Women’s Day initiative hosted by the not-for-profit organisation ‘Girls of Impact’, where young women from nine Secondary Schools in Tobago participated in a one-day workshop.

The session focused on empowering them to serve their communities while developing the confidence and skills needed to become future leaders.
